Year End Summary

The 2010-2011 softball season is over but it feels like it never really started. The weather was unusually cold and wet during the opening weeks of the season. Many teams had games cancelled due to the weather and were not able to reschedule the games.

This year New Westminster Minor sent three teams to Provincials. The Squirts journeyed to Kamloops, the Bantam B Royals team went to North Delta. and Junior B Riot travelled to Maple Ridge.

Squirts

Under first year coaches Candi and Steve Glover and Jim Butts, the Squirts won the District 6 playoffs in Richmond to qualify for the right to go to the Provincials in Kamloops. After the 4 game round robin the Squirts were fourth out of sixteen teams going into the double knockout playoff format. When it was all said and done, the Squirts finished 5th in the province. A very good showing for the team.

Bantam B Royals

The second year Royals have made tremendous strides in their play in just two years. This season at the District playoffs, the Royals met a very determined Richmond Islanders team for the pro-rata allocation to go Provincials in North Delta. The Royals were comfortably in the lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. A huge comeback by very determined and gusty Richmond tied the game and only an huge defensive play by the Royals infield ended  the inning and send it into extra innings under the international tie breaking rule. In the Royals top of the 8th they scored 4 runs and held the Richmond team off and won their way into the Provincials.

At Provincials the Royals very unlucky to be placed in a pool with the eventual Provincial Champion Surrey Storm and 4th place team Cordova Bay. The Royals went winless in four games.  Coaches Temple Anderson and Myriah Purss have done a great job with this team.

Junior B Riot

The Riot like all the other teams suffered from the weather. many games were cancelled and never played. It felt like the season never got started. The Riot played in 3 tournaments this season. Starting in North Delta where the team managed a tie and 3 losses, then to Kelowna where the team finished third and finally in a rain shorted Cloverdale tournament where the team went 0 for 2.

Then it was on to Provincials in Maple Ridge. When the dust finally settled the Riot finished 4th losing the 3/4 game to the eventual Provincial Champion the Burnaby Hurricane.

Overall the team played very well considering the Riot has only been  together for 3 years. The Riot in provincial competition has a third and two fourth place finishes.

The Riot would also like to thank our many supporters that contributed to our team through our fundraiser earlier in the year. Please go to the News tab and the Sponsors tab on the left hand side and view the companies that supported our team. If you have an opportunity to support them with your business please do to show your thanks to them.

Parents - your coach needs your help!

Coaching can be a very rewarding volunteer position. However, it can also be burdensome if parents do not help with the many tasks that revolve around coaching. Lend a hand to your child's team and help make this season enjoyable for all involved. Depending on division and coach, here are a few jobs where volunteers are needed:

  • Field set-up for home games (lines and bases)

  • Scorekeeping

  • Telephone communication with team

  • Help during warm-up before games

  • Help during practices

  • Carrying equipment to and from games and practices

Ask your coach what you can do to help out.

Note:
Parent participation is required at all times for Blastball and T-Ball.

Volunteer

NWMSA is run entirely by volunteers. We can always use an extra hand. Coaches and team managers are needed for all divisions. Many other jobs are available as well. If you are interested in volunteering, telephone NWMSA at 778-786-1145 or e-mail nwmsa@newwestsoftball.ca.
